Thursday night, the Lakers hosted Every Child Matters night at the Memorial Centre. It was a true celebration of the Indigenous Heritage of lacrosse, with dancers from Turtle Island participating in the pre-game ceremonies.
But the highlight of the night was the presentation of an Eagle Feather from Hiawatha Nation to Lakers' Director of Communications Brian Cowie.
And watch Chief Laurie Carr's explanation of the importance of the Eagle Feather below.
Here's the speech that was read over the PA:
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we gather to honor a remarkable individual whose dedication and contributions have left an undeniable mark on the sport of lacrosse and the Century 21 Lakers organization.
Brian Cowie is a man of many talents, serving tirelessly in various capacities in the communities of Peterborough and Hiawatha. From his impactful role on the Trent University Board of Governors to his current position as the chair of the Hiawatha Economic Development Corporation, Brian epitomizes leadership and commitment in all that he does.
However, tonight we shine a spotlight on Brian's unwavering dedication and profound contributions to lacrosse. A pivotal moment in his lacrosse journey was his 1978 Mann Cup victory with the Red Oaks, alongside his brother Gerard. Fast forward 40 years, and we find Brian serving on the board of the Century 21 Lakers, helping steer organization through an incredible streak of four consecutive Mann Cup victories.
Since joining the board in 2015, Brian has been a guiding force, constantly prioritizing the needs of the organization and advocating for the future generations of lacrosse players. Brian's expertise in legal matters and his invaluable insights have been instrumental in navigating negotiations and decisions with the city. His quiet yet firm voice commands attention, and his wisdom is a guiding light for the entire organization. He reminds us of the importance of nurturing the young spirits who will carry the legacy of Peterborough lacrosse forward for years to come.
Tonight, we honor Brian Cowie not just for his achievements on the field, but for his enduring commitment to the sport, the community, and the future of lacrosse. Let us applaud and celebrate the remarkable contributions of this deserving recipient of the Eagle Feather Award."
