PETERBOROUGH, ON – The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers raised their 2022 Mann Cup championship banner on Thursday night at the Memorial Centre, but the night was marred by a 14-13 loss to the Brampton Excelsiors.
Brampton jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Lakers rattled off three in a row in a span of 1:09. Taite Catton got on the board first with a classic overhand shot up the middle. Taite and older brother Holden would go on to combine for 13 points in the game.
Thomas Hoggarth provided a little magic next, beating Excels' goalie Lucas Nagy with a one-handed underhand shot. The Lakers won the ensuing faceoff, and Mitch Ogilvie streaked to the net to score.
But Brampton turned on the jets and scored three more in the last 1:26, including two in the last 12 seconds, to end the first period up 6-3.
Josh Currier opened the scoring in the second, but Brampton scored four straight for a 10-4 lead. Holden Cattoni scored two of his five goals in the game to close out the period.
Though Peterborough made inroads in the third period, the Excelsiors had an answer nearly every time. Down 14-10, Cattoni scored a power play goal, followed up by a pair 20 seconds apart from Taite Cattoni, but the Lakers couldn’t find the equalizer.
Drew Hutchison made 41 saves in goal for Peterborough.
The Excelsiors, who picked up their first win of the season following three losses, were led by Tanner Thomson’s four goals.
The Lakers fall to 2-1 on the season, and look to get back in the win column on Sunday when they visit the Cobourg Kodiaks at 6 p.m. They also hit the road Tuesday to visit Six Nations, and then return home to the PMC next Thursday, June 15 to host the Kodiaks.
Tickets for next week’s game are on sale at the PMC box office.
