The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers took a 1-0 lead in their MSL Quarterfinal series over the Owen Sound North Stars on Thursday night with a 12-5 win at the Memorial Centre.
Thomas Hoggarth led the Lakers with a hat trick and two assists, while Joe Resetarits scored once but dished out seven assists.
Hellyer and Turner Evans made it 2-0 before Thomas Hoggarth tiptoed the crease to score shorthanded. Owen Sound popped in a single goal before the first period was out.
Hellyer opened up the second period scoring with his second of the game. Owen Hiltz faked low and shot high for the prettiest goal of the night, and a 5-1 lead. Evans then forced a turnover at half – the ball popped free to Hiltz, who passed it back up to Evans for the goal. Austin Hasen scored 26 seconds after that. Dylan Hutchison’s transition goal chased Kaleb Martin from the Owen Sound net. Thomas Hoggarth immediately put two goals up on replacement Ethan Woods, including a horizontal crease dive after a low pass from Resetarits.
The North Stars found some resolve and went on a brief three-goal run early in a span of 1:36 early in the third period. Resetarits scored a power play goal, followed up by a Colton Armstrong transition marker.
Doug Buchan made 34 saves for the win, and held Owen Sound to a single goal for 40+ minutes of lacrosse.
Kaleb Martin allowed eight goals before giving way to Ethan Woods, who held the Lakers to four goals in his half of the game. Martin made 17 saves and Woods made 26. Jackson Webster scored three goals and one assist to lead the North Stars on the score sheet.
Missing for the Lakers were Robert Hope (Jr. A Lakers), Koleton Marquis, Matt Gilray, Taite Cattoni (lower body injury) and Holden Cattoni (prior commitment). Carter Page left the game in the first period after a collision in front of the net. Holden Lowes and Adam Thistlethwaite drew into the lineup to help fill some holes.
Game 2 in the series switches to the Harry Lumley Bayshore Arena in Owen Sound on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Game 3 is back in Peterborough next Thursday, July 25. Tickets are now on sale at the box office.
