The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers drew first blood against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club with a 14-10 win at Iroquois Park Sports Centre on Tuesday night.
It was a rough, physical affair throughout, with neither team willing to give an inch. It was tied 6-6 after the first period with Holden Cattoni and Joe Resetarits leading the way with a pair of goals each.
“Usually you kind of feel each other out but it was wide open from the get go,” said head coach Mike Hasen. “Everybody capitalizes on mistakes at both ends of the floor. She was wide open, she was very helter-skelter to say the least, in the first period.”
Things settled down in the second, and the Lakers were able to pull ahead 11-8, with Taylor Jensen recording his first two-goal game, capitalizing on two-on-ones with Matt Gilray and Mitch Ogilvie to open and close the period.
“That was the most fun I’ve had, definitely,” said Jensen, who contributed four points overall. “Kells did awesome, Ogilvie, Gilray, Pace did awesome. Everyone did awesome. I’m happy to play with all of these guys.”
Landon Kells held Brooklin scoreless for the last 17 minutes of play, allowing the Lakers to hold and then increase their lead.
Game 2 is set for this Thursday, August 1 at the Memorial Centre at 8 p.m. Season ticket holders have until the end of business on Wednesday to secure their seats. Single-game tickets go on sale Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
